Drinking Culture Hidden in Japan’s Liquor Stores
I dislike writing about and recommending things I haven’t done, but I’m making an exception because this is simply too good to keep to myself (and it’s one of the things I’m most looking forward to doing when I get back to Japan).
Some liquor stores in Japan turn into mini-izakayas (pubs) in the evening. They’re called “kaku-uchi” and serve as gathering places for local communities. I think meeting regular people in their neighborhoods and getting to hang out in a casual environment is the best way to experience any country and learn things you won’t find in any guidebook. This is what I travel for. That, and good food of course. I’m not crazy!
Read this article and plan accordingly.
Japanese Anti-Hangover Drink
If you’re going to have a drink (or several) but don’t want to suffer the ill effects in the morning, Japan has a drink that can banish that dreaded hangover.
To be fair, there is a limit. Don’t think you can have a dozen drinks and get off without any repercussions. But for a reasonable evening of fun, it’s a great item to drink before you drink! I’ve tried it and I’m a believer.
Bib Gourmand
Bib Gourmand is a ranking made by the Michelin Guide folks for food that is exceptionally good at affordable prices. This is where incredible taste and value intersect. The perfect sweet spot for a budget-conscious traveler who wants to experience the culinary excellence of Japan. While I’ve never had any trouble finding delicious food in Japan, I just discovered this list and can’t wait to explore these restaurants.
